What changes between an Indian resume and a CV for New Zealand

New Zealanders say CV for exactly what an American calls a resume. There is no separate short form and no distinction to observe.

No photograph.

No date of birth or marital status. State your visa position plainly and early.

Aim for two pages. Use a third only when senior or technical evidence cannot fit clearly without crowding the page.

If you searched for a resume template NZ employers will recognise, you need a New Zealand CV template. For an experienced applicant, use the work-focused order below and tailor the evidence to the vacancy.

• Name and contact details — name, current location, phone with country code, professional email, and LinkedIn or portfolio link where relevant.
• Personal statement — a short summary of the role you target, the experience you bring, and the value you can show.
• Key skills — lead with skills named in the job advertisement, supported by evidence elsewhere in the CV.
• Work and volunteer history — newest role first, with employer, title, location, dates, responsibilities, and achievements.
• Education and qualifications — newest or most relevant first, including provider, location, qualification, and completion date.
• Relevant certifications, professional memberships, community work, or interests — include these only when they strengthen the application.
• Referees — list suitable people and your working relationship, or write ‘Referees available on request’ unless the advertisement asks for details.

Use a skills-focused version if you are leaving education, changing careers, returning after a gap, or have limited work history: keep the same contact details and statement, then move evidenced skills ahead of employment history. Use simple headings, bullets, and generous white space. Send a PDF unless the employer asks for Word, and name it Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf.

The rules that only apply in New Zealand

• When the application asks for a cover letter, use it to connect your experience to that employer and vacancy rather than repeating the CV.
• Name each referee's working relationship to you as well as their title. Careers New Zealand recommends at least two credible, professional referees who can discuss your work and how you work.
• Because employers must hold accreditation before they can hire a migrant, applying to employers who already hold it is a far better use of time than applying broadly and hoping.

Careers New Zealand says recruitment software is used by recruitment agents and many employers. Use the role title, skills, and other relevant wording from the job advertisement naturally, while keeping the page simple enough for a recruiter to scan quickly.
