Resume for freshers, built the way India actually hires.
A fresher resume in India is one page, in this order: contact, a three-line summary, education, projects, internships, skills, achievements. Education sits above experience because it is the strongest thing you have. Projects and internships ARE your experience section — dated, with bullets, with numbers. And seven things that are on almost every Indian fresher template come off: the declaration, the photo, date of birth, the objective, hobbies, the certificate wall, and 'references available on request'. Drop your file below and the same rules get applied to it in about sixty seconds.

What a fresher resume in India must contain, in order.
Seven sections, top to bottom. The order is not a preference: it is what a recruiter with four seconds and a parser with no judgement both need.
- 1
Contact line
Name, phone with the country code, a professional email address, city and state, and your LinkedIn or GitHub URL written out in full. In the body of the document, never in a header or footer — text in a header is the single most common thing parsing software drops.
- 2
Summary
Three lines naming your qualification, the two or three things you can actually do, and the kind of role you are applying for. Written about what you can do, not what you want. An objective that says you seek a challenging role in a reputed organisation says nothing and costs you the most valuable inch of the page.
- 3
Education
Above experience, because for a fresher it is the strongest thing on the page. Degree, branch, institution, city, year of completion, and your CGPA or percentage if it helps you. Class 12 and Class 10 get one line each; drop them once you have a degree and any real experience.
- 4
Projects
Your substitute for employment, and treated exactly like it: a title, a date range, the stack or method, and two or three bullets that say what you built, what problem it solved, and what the result was. Include the repository or the live link. Academic projects count; so do the ones nobody assigned you.
- 5
Internships and training
Dated like a job, with the organisation, the role and bullets about what you actually did there. Two months of real work described specifically beats a year of a certificate course described vaguely.
- 6
Skills
Grouped, not a wall of commas. Languages, tools, frameworks, and the domain skills the role names. Only list what you would be willing to be questioned on for ten minutes.
- 7
Achievements, certifications, positions of responsibility
Rank in a competitive exam, a hackathon placement, a paper, a scholarship, the technical fest you actually ran. This is where a fresher's evidence of drive lives, and most fresher resumes leave it out entirely.
One page. Every one of those sections fits on one page for someone with no full-time employment yet, and a fresher resume that runs to two is padded — which a recruiter can tell in four seconds, before reading a word of it. If it will not fit, the things to remove are in the next section, and they are almost never your projects.
Seven things on almost every Indian fresher template that have to go.
None of these are your fault. They are inherited — from a college placement-cell format, from a senior's file, from a template that was current when applications were printed. All of them cost you space on the one page you get.
The declaration and your signature
"I hereby declare that the above information is true to the best of my knowledge" is a leftover from paper applications. No recruiter reads it, and it costs you three lines at the bottom of a one-page document.
Photograph
Standard on Indian templates and a liability nearly everywhere else. An image also carries a real parsing cost: anything the layout hangs off it can be dropped. Keep it only where a market genuinely expects it, which for a fresher applying in India, the US, the UK or Canada it does not.
Date of birth, marital status, father's name, nationality, passport number
Personal fields belong on a Gulf application if the employer asks, and nowhere else by default. They tell a recruiter nothing about whether you can do the job and they are the first thing a screener uses to form an impression they are not supposed to form.
"Objective: seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation"
Every fresher resume in the pile opens with a version of this sentence. It is interchangeable, which is the whole problem. Replace it with three lines that could only be about you.
Hobbies, unless one is genuinely relevant
"Reading, listening to music, travelling" is filler that tells a recruiter you had space left. A hobby earns its line when it is evidence — you maintain an open-source library, you run a 5,000-member community, you have shipped a game.
Every certificate you have ever collected
A wall of course completions reads as activity, not capability. Keep the ones a job posting actually names and let the projects carry the rest.
References available on request
Assumed by everyone who reads resumes, so the line carries no information at all. It is also, reliably, one of the things pushing a one-page fresher resume onto a second page.
What people mean when they search for the Naukri format.
There is no proprietary layout to copy. What the query is really asking is how to be findable on a job board whose product is a searchable candidate database — and the answer generalises to every applicant tracking system in the market.
The database is the product, and your resume is its input
Recruiters mostly do not read a folder of PDFs. They search a candidate database with filters, and the profile those filters read is populated partly by hand and partly by parsing the resume you upload. A resume the parser reads cleanly becomes a profile that appears in searches; a beautifully designed one it reads badly becomes a half-empty profile that does not.
"Naukri format" means the format that parses, not a proprietary layout
There is no secret template. What the query is really asking for is the plain, single-column, reverse-chronological document with standard section headings that any parser handles: no tables, no text boxes, no two-column layouts, no icons standing in for words, contact details in the body. That is also what every other ATS in the market wants, so optimising for one is optimising for all of them.
The structured fields do the filtering, so fill them honestly
Total experience, current and preferred location, notice period, qualification, key skills. These are the filters recruiters actually move, and a profile that leaves them blank is invisible to a search that specifies them. Nothing on your resume rescues an empty structured field.
Keywords have to be words, in sentences, in context
The database is searched by term. That means the technologies and domain terms in your target role need to be present in your resume as things you did — in a project bullet, in a skills group — and not stuffed into a white-text block at the bottom. Keyword stuffing is detectable and it is the fastest way to get a profile deprioritised.
Freshness is a ranking signal on a job board
Candidate search results are commonly ordered with recently updated profiles first. Updating your profile — genuinely, when something changes — is worth more to your visibility than another redesign of the PDF.
The practical version: a single-column document, standard headings, contact details in the body, no tables and no text boxes, and the skills a posting names present as things you actually did. That file parses on a job board, on a corporate ATS, and on a recruiter's screen. The eighteen parse checks are published with the points each one carries, so you can audit yours against them rather than guessing.
The mistakes that are specific to being a fresher.
Not general resume advice. These are the eight failures that come from having no employment history yet and copying a document built by somebody who does.
Copying a senior's resume format
A resume built for twelve years of experience puts employment at the top and gives education two lines. Applied to a fresher, it opens with an empty section and buries the strongest thing you have.
Describing projects as coursework
"Made a library management system as part of the DBMS course" is a submission. "Built a library management system in Django and Postgres handling 400 titles and 60 concurrent users; deployed it for the department library" is a project. Same work, and only one of them survives a screen.
Listing every technology you have touched once
A skills section with thirty entries is read as a skills section with zero. The interviewer picks the one you are weakest on, because that is what the list invited.
Two pages with nothing on the second
A fresher resume that runs long is padded, and a recruiter can tell in four seconds. One page. If it does not fit, the declaration, the hobbies and the objective are still on it.
No numbers anywhere
Freshers assume numbers require a job. They do not: users, records, accuracy, team size, marks, rank, hours saved, downloads. A bullet with a quantity in it is read; one without is skimmed.
One resume for every application
The skills and the summary have to move toward the posting. A fresher applying to a data role and a support role with an identical document loses both.
An unprofessional email address, or a broken link
It is trivial and it is fatal at the screening stage. Check the LinkedIn URL resolves and the GitHub is not empty before you send anything.
Percentages hidden because they are low
A missing CGPA reads worse than a modest one. If it is genuinely poor, leave it out and let the projects carry the page — but do not leave a gap where a year of graduation should be. Gaps get inferred, and the inference is never generous.
Fresher resumes, by field, written out in full.
Real documents rather than screenshots of a template: what the bullets say, how the projects are dated, where the education sits. Copy the structure, never the content.
Everything at fresher level
The level hub lists every sample in the 0–3 year band across all fields, with what changes at that level stated once.

Two scores out of 100, five to seven problems ranked by what each one costs you, the keywords your target role expects, and a note on every section — including whether your education is in the right place for your experience level.
Free resume reviewThe parse check
Eighteen weighted checks computed in code — single column, no content tables, contact in the body, standard headings, dates that parse. This is the one that tells you whether the placement-cell template you were handed survives a job board.
ATS resume checkerWhat the number means
A first fresher resume that scores in the 40s is normal and is not a verdict on you. The bands are published, so you can see what the score is calibrated against before you get one.
