Cover letter examples with something to say.

Use these as structure, not a script. Each fictional letter connects a few real-world responsibilities to a target role. Replace the facts and read the employer’s instructions before writing your own.

Customer service

Fictional candidate: handled retail returns, trained two colleagues and maintained a shared FAQ. Applying for a customer-support role.

Dear Hiring Team,

Your customer-support role calls for someone who can resolve a problem and explain the answer clearly. In my retail role at Northline, I handled returns, answered product questions and helped customers understand their options when their first choice was unavailable.

I also maintained our shared FAQ after noticing that new colleagues were asking the same questions about returns. I updated the answers with examples from the shop floor and used the guide when training two colleagues. That work taught me to make instructions useful to the person reading them, not just complete on paper.

I would bring that combination of patient communication and practical documentation to your support team. I am interested in learning your product and helping customers get to a clear next step.

Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how this experience fits the role.

Best regards, Maya Rao

The letter connects two specific responsibilities to the job. It does not claim a satisfaction score or ticket volume the candidate has not supplied.

Software engineering

Fictional graduate: built a library booking project with React and PostgreSQL, worked on validation and wrote integration tests. Applying for a junior developer role.

Dear Hiring Team,

I am applying for your junior developer role because it combines the work I enjoyed most in my final-year project: building a usable interface and making sure the data behind it stays consistent. Our team built a library room-booking application using React and PostgreSQL.

My part focused on the booking form and its validation. I added checks for missing details and overlapping reservations, then wrote integration tests for those cases. Testing the form with classmates also helped me find instructions that made sense to us as developers but were unclear to someone using it for the first time.

The project gave me practice in following a change from the interface through to the database and explaining my decisions to teammates. I would like to build on that experience in a team that reviews code and gives junior developers room to learn.

My resume includes the project details and repository link. Thank you for considering my application; I would be glad to walk through the work.

Best regards, Aditi Bose

A project is valid evidence for an early-career application. Name your personal contribution and avoid presenting coursework as paid employment.

Career change into operations

Fictional teacher: coordinated term schedules, kept shared records and helped staff adopt a new booking process. Applying for an operations coordinator role.

Dear Hiring Team,

I am moving from teaching into operations coordination, bringing experience in organising schedules, keeping shared records accurate and helping colleagues use new processes. Those responsibilities were a regular part of my work at Eastbridge School, alongside classroom teaching.

When the school changed its room-booking process, I helped staff record requests consistently and kept a shared schedule up to date. I checked conflicting bookings, clarified the missing details with colleagues and made the instructions easier to follow. The work required careful follow-through and clear communication across a busy team.

Your operations coordinator role interests me because it makes those responsibilities the focus of the job. I would bring the organisation and practical problem-solving I developed at school while learning the systems your team uses.

I would welcome a conversation about the role and where my experience could be useful. Thank you for considering my application.

Best regards, Sam Taylor

The example names the career change directly. It explains relevant work without changing the candidate’s previous job title.
