What changes between an Indian resume and a CV for the UK
It is a CV in the UK, in every sector, always. "Resume" is not wrong so much as foreign, and the filename you attach should say CV too.
No photograph. UK recruiters strip them as a matter of course, and some agencies will not put a CV carrying one in front of a client at all.
No date of birth, marital status, gender or nationality. A UK CV opens with your name, one contact line and a short personal profile โ and the profile is expected here, unlike the US where a summary is optional.
Two pages is the convention and it is socially enforced. A three-page CV is read as an inability to edit before it is read as depth.
British spelling throughout โ organise, analyse, programme, centre, specialise. This is the one that gets noticed, because the mismatch is obvious to an English reader in the first paragraph.
The rules that only apply in the UK
- British CVs are written in a flatter register than Indian ones. "Spearheaded a paradigm-shifting transformation" reads as noise; "led the migration, cut processing time 40%" reads as a person who did the work.
- Put right-to-work status near the top. "Requires Skilled Worker sponsorship" is not a disqualifier at a licensed sponsor and it saves both sides a screening call.
- Translate your grades. A percentage or CGPA means nothing against a 2:1, so give the class equivalent and name the university's country.
How your CV actually gets read in the UK
Recruitment agencies place a large share of UK roles, which changes what your CV is matched against: agency systems keyword-match you against a live vacancy list before a consultant ever reads a line. The practical consequence is that the vacancy's job title has to appear in your CV, not your employer's internal designation for the same work.
Where The UK roles are advertised: LinkedIn, Indeed, Reed and Totaljobs.
What employers in the UK ask about your right to work
Working in the UK from outside means a Skilled Worker visa, and only an employer holding a sponsor licence can offer one โ the published register of licensed sponsors is the list actually worth applying against. The Global Talent route exists for people who can obtain an endorsement and needs no employer at all.
