What changes between an Indian resume and a resume for the USA
In the United States the document is a resume. "CV" there means an academic curriculum vitae β the long, publication-listing kind used for faculty, research and some medical posts β so attaching a file named CV to a corporate application quietly says you have not applied in this market before.
Leave the photograph off. US employers treat an unsolicited photo as a discrimination-liability problem, and recruiting teams are routinely instructed to redact or discard resumes that carry one.
Delete the personal-details block that opens most Indian resumes: date of birth, marital status, gender, nationality, father's name, passport number. None of it is lawful for a US employer to weigh, and its presence is read as unfamiliarity rather than thoroughness.
One page is the default under about ten years of experience, and two pages is normal beyond that. "One page always" is a myth that costs senior applicants real evidence; three pages is not a myth, it is too long.
American spelling throughout β organize, analyze, program, center, labor. Set the document language to English (United States) rather than correcting words one at a time.
Write months as words: "Mar 2021 β Present", not 03/2021. Numeric dates read month-first in the US and day-first in India, so a purely numeric range is ambiguous exactly where the reader is checking your tenure.
The rules that only apply in the USA
- Give scale in terms a US reader can size. "A team of 12", "a $4M portfolio", "India's third-largest private bank" β the name of an Indian employer carries no size signal in Ohio, and the reader will not look it up.
- Order runs summary β experience β skills β education. Education drops below experience the moment you have a job history, which is the reverse of the fresher-style layout most Indian resumes keep for years.
- There is no declaration line and no signature at the bottom of a US resume. Delete both.
How your resume actually gets read in the USA
Most US applications enter through the employer's own careers page rather than the board you found the ad on, and that page is Workday, Taleo, iCIMS or Greenhouse. It will ask you to re-key your history into a form after you upload. A single-column file with plain headings makes that autofill land correctly; a two-column template makes you retype all of it by hand, and most people retype it badly.
Where The USA roles are advertised: LinkedIn and Indeed.
What employers in the USA ask about your right to work
US employers ask two questions outright: are you authorised to work in the United States, and will you now or in future need sponsorship. Answer both plainly. H-1B is capped and allocated by lottery, so from India the realistic targets are employers who sponsor as policy β and cap-exempt ones, which include universities, teaching hospitals and certain non-profit research bodies.
