What changes between an Indian resume and a resume for Canada
Canada says resume, with the same academic exception as the US. Quebec employers may ask for a CV in French, where CV is simply the ordinary word for the document rather than a different one.
No photograph. Provincial human rights codes bar employers from weighing age, marital status, ethnic origin and religion, and a photo hands over all four before the first line is read.
Cut the personal-details block. Do keep a city, and a Canadian phone number if you have one: a recruiter reading "Bengaluru" prices in relocation time and cost before assessing whether you fit.
Two pages is normal and unremarkable in Canada โ noticeably more relaxed than the American one-page instinct, and you are expected to use the room for evidence rather than prose.
Canadian spelling is a genuine hybrid and worth getting right: British -our and -re (colour, labour, centre) with American -ize (organize, analyze). Set the language to English (Canada) rather than picking one of the other two and hoping.
The rules that only apply in Canada
- State where you stand on status in the first three lines โ Permanent Resident, open work permit, eligible under Express Entry. "Canadian experience" screening is the largest single filter an India-based applicant meets, and ambiguity is resolved against you.
- Regulated professions โ nursing, engineering, accounting, teaching, medicine โ are gated by a provincial regulator, not by the employer. If you have started credential assessment or licensing, name it: WES, the P.Eng route, the CPA route.
- Volunteering is read as real experience in Canada to a degree it is not in India, and belongs in its own short section rather than buried in an interests line.
How your resume actually gets read in Canada
Large Canadian employers and the federal public service both run structured application forms over Workday, Taleo or SuccessFactors, and the public-service ones score you against written qualifications before any human opens the file. Answer those screening questions in the posting's own words, not your internal vocabulary.
Where Canada roles are advertised: LinkedIn, Indeed and Job Bank.
What employers in Canada ask about your right to work
Express Entry is the route most India-based applicants actually take and it needs no job offer. An employer-sponsored permit usually needs an LMIA, which employers avoid unless the role is genuinely hard to fill; technology roles at scale-ups often go through the Global Talent Stream instead, which is materially faster.
