What changes between an Indian resume and a CV for Hong Kong
CV is the more common word in Hong Kong, though resume is understood everywhere.
Practice is split. Photographs on Hong Kong CVs remain common, particularly through agencies and for client-facing roles, while multinational employers increasingly ask for them to be left off. Applying to a global bank or a professional-services firm, omit it.
Do not put your HKID number on the CV. Nationality and visa status are, by contrast, routinely stated and genuinely useful to the reader.
Two pages.
British spelling.
The rules that only apply in Hong Kong
- Language ability is a hard screening field rather than a footnote. State Cantonese, Mandarin and written Chinese separately and honestly — "Chinese" covers three different requirements and job advertisements specify which one they mean.
- Licensing matters in finance. SFC licence types, or the exams you have passed toward them, belong near the top of the CV for any regulated role.
- Expected salary is often asked for outright in Hong Kong applications, and a range with your current package as context is the normal answer rather than an evasion.
How your CV actually gets read in Hong Kong
Hong Kong hiring runs heavily through recruitment agencies and JobsDB, so your CV is first matched inside an agency database rather than an employer's ATS. Agency consultants search on market job titles and licence names, which makes the standard title more valuable than an accurate internal one.
Where Hong Kong roles are advertised: JobsDB, LinkedIn and eFinancialCareers.
What employers in Hong Kong ask about your right to work
Non-local hires need an employment visa under the General Employment Policy, sponsored by the employer. The Top Talent Pass Scheme is a separate route for graduates of a defined list of universities or high earners, and it does not need a job offer first.
