Teaching Cover Letter: Examples for Indian Schools

Write a teaching cover letter with clear qualifications and classroom evidence. Adapt fictional English-teacher and physical-education examples for your role.

A teaching cover letter should connect your qualifications and classroom experience to the specific vacancy. Name the subject or age group, give a useful example of your teaching practice and explain why the role interests you. Follow the school's application instructions: a letter may accompany a resume, form, teaching statement or other requested documents. It cannot replace a qualification or eligibility requirement.

Start with the school and the role

Use the exact vacancy title and reference number when one is supplied. Address the named contact if you have verified the name; otherwise, Dear hiring team is suitable. Explain which role you want in the opening sentence. Avoid a generic letter that could be sent to a primary school, an engineering college and a sports academy without changing anything.

Research the school through its own public information and use only facts you can verify. If the vacancy describes a particular curriculum, age group or extracurricular responsibility, connect that requirement to your real experience. Do not praise an invented programme or claim familiarity with a board syllabus you have never taught or studied.

State your qualifications accurately

Use the exact degree or training title and distinguish completed study from work in progress. Include eligibility tests, registrations or specialist credentials only when they are yours and relevant to the vacancy. Requirements can differ by role, institution and jurisdiction. Check the current recruitment notice rather than treating a sample letter as an eligibility checklist.

For a fresher, supervised teaching practice is valid evidence when it is labelled clearly. Name the class or subject context and your contribution. Do not present a placement as an independently managed full-time teaching post. If you are changing subjects or age groups, explain the relevant preparation without concealing the difference.

Choose one classroom example

A useful example explains the learning objective, your action and what you observed. You might describe how you adjusted instructions after reviewing student responses or how you organised a reading activity. Avoid claiming that one lesson transformed every student's performance. A measurement is useful only when you can explain what it measures and how it was obtained.

Keep student names, photographs, marks and personal circumstances out of a public application unless sharing is properly authorised and appropriate. You can discuss teaching decisions without exposing a child's private information. Distinguish classroom support from counselling, clinical or specialist responsibilities that require separate qualifications.

Fictional English-teacher cover letter

The candidate, schools and achievements in this example are fictional. Replace every detail with your own evidence before applying.

Dear hiring team,

I am applying for the English Teacher role at Example Rivergate School. I hold a B.Ed. and completed a supervised teaching placement with middle-school English classes. Your vacancy's focus on reading comprehension and clear written expression matches the areas I most enjoyed planning and teaching during that placement.

For a short-story unit, I prepared questions at different levels of difficulty and used students' written responses to identify where the next lesson needed more explanation. With my supervisor's feedback, I revised the instructions and added a short model response before the next activity. This helped me make the task clearer while keeping the learning objective consistent.

I also supported a reading-club session and maintained the activity notes requested by the supervising teacher. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute that careful planning and reflective approach to your English department.

My resume is attached as requested. Thank you for considering my application. I would be pleased to discuss my placement experience and the role's requirements.

Kind regards,

Asha Rao

Fictional physical-education cover letter

This second example is also fictional. It illustrates how to describe supervised physical-education experience without inventing coaching awards, health outcomes or eligibility.

Dear hiring team,

I am applying for the Physical Education Teacher vacancy at Example Willow School. I completed a B.P.Ed. and a supervised school placement, where I helped plan age-appropriate group activities and supported clear routines for equipment preparation and class organisation.

During one unit, I worked with the supervising teacher to make the activity instructions easier to follow and to organise smaller practice groups. I recorded participation using the school's agreed format and discussed the next lesson with my supervisor. I also followed the school's process for reporting equipment concerns rather than attempting tasks outside my placement responsibilities.

I am interested in helping pupils participate confidently while working within the school's curriculum and safeguarding procedures. My resume provides the placement dates and qualification details. I would welcome a conversation about the role and the documents you require.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,

Rohan Mehta

Adapt the example to your experience level

An experienced teacher can replace the placement example with recent classroom planning, assessment, curriculum or mentoring work. Keep the scope accurate. Coordinating a year-group activity is different from leading a department. If the vacancy includes sports coaching, a club or pastoral responsibilities, describe the relevant work and qualifications you actually hold.

A fresher does not need to invent years of experience. A specific supervised example can show preparation, reflection and communication. Explain what you learned and how you responded to feedback. Do not use a generic percentage improvement merely because another letter contains one.

Keep the letter and resume consistent

Use the same qualification names, employment titles and dates in both documents. The letter can explain one example in more depth while the resume gives the broader history. Use the teacher resume example for structure and the teaching interview guide to prepare to discuss your examples.

Before sending, check the school's name, role title, greeting, attachment and requested file format. Remove unused placeholders and unsupported claims. Read the final letter yourself. A clear application helps the school understand your evidence; it does not guarantee an interview or appointment.
