Austria CV format: what changes when you apply from India
The Red-White-Red points table is effectively the brief for your CV.
- What it is called
- CV
- Photograph
- Customary, not required
- Length
- 1–2 pages
- Spelling
- German for domestic roles
- Right to work
- Red-White-Red Card, awarded on points
What changes between an Indian resume and a CV for Austria
Lebenslauf, on the German pattern, with a cover letter (Anschreiben or Motivationsschreiben) expected alongside it rather than optional.
Still customary in Austria — more so than at Germany's international employers — and still not something anyone may require. Include one for a domestic employer; leave it off for an international one in Vienna.
Date of birth and nationality are commonly stated. Language ability is given on the Common European Framework scale — A1 through C2 — rather than as "fluent", which an Austrian reader treats as unmeasured.
One to two pages.
German for German-language roles, and German ability is a genuine requirement outside the international employers in Vienna rather than a nice-to-have.
The rules that only apply in Austria
- The Red-White-Red Card is a points system, and the points are the application: qualifications, work experience, language ability, age and any Austrian study each score separately. Lay out on the CV precisely the things that score, in the order they score.
- Give your degree in its official title rather than an anglicised approximation. Austrian employers and authorities read formal qualification titles literally, and a renamed degree creates a mismatch with your transcripts.
How your CV actually gets read in Austria
karriere.at is the dominant domestic board and most applications go through it or through an employer's own form. The pack expectation matches Germany's: one PDF, cover letter first, certificates behind the CV.
Where Austria roles are advertised: karriere.at, StepStone and LinkedIn.
What employers in Austria ask about your right to work
The Red-White-Red Card is the main route for skilled third-country nationals and is awarded on points, with a separate variant for the shortage occupations published each year.
