What changes between an Indian resume and a CV for Germany
The document is a Lebenslauf, a tabular CV, and it is one part of a Bewerbung — the application pack, which normally also carries a cover letter (Anschreiben) and copies of your certificates and employer references.
Genuinely contested, and anyone who tells you otherwise is describing half the market. The Bewerbungsfoto is a long-standing German convention and a large share of CVs still carry one; the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) means no employer may require it, and international employers in Berlin and Munich increasingly prefer CVs without. Include one for a traditional Mittelstand employer, omit it for an international technology employer, and do not agonise over it.
Date of birth and place of birth are traditional on a Lebenslauf and still common, though no longer expected. Nationality is normal. Marital status has largely disappeared.
One to two pages, tabular, strictly reverse-chronological. The format is closer to a structured record than to the narrative document an Indian resume tends to be.
If the advertisement is in German, apply in German — a German-language role wants a German-language CV, and this is not a preference. For English-language roles at international employers, British spelling.
The rules that only apply in Germany
- A German CV is expected to have no gaps at all. A period of study, caring or job search is named and dated rather than left out, and an unexplained six-month hole is read as concealment rather than as nothing having happened.
- Employer reference certificates (Arbeitszeugnisse) are a legal entitlement in Germany and are normally attached to an application. Indian employers issue no equivalent, so attach reference letters and add one line explaining that — otherwise their absence is read as a bad one.
- Foreign degrees are assessed for recognition, and the anabin database records how a specific Indian university and degree is rated. Check your entry before applying: it decides whether you qualify for the routes that require a recognised degree at all.
How your CV actually gets read in Germany
Large German employers run SAP SuccessFactors, which will surprise nobody, and mid-sized ones very often still take applications as an email with a single PDF attached. Send one combined, correctly ordered PDF — cover letter, CV, certificates — rather than five separate files, because the pack is the unit the reader expects.
Where Germany roles are advertised: StepStone, LinkedIn, XING and Bundesagentur für Arbeit.
What employers in Germany ask about your right to work
The EU Blue Card is the main route for a graduate-level offer above an annually set salary threshold, with a lower threshold for shortage occupations. The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a points-based permit that lets you enter to look for work with no offer in hand.
