Resignation letter for a better opportunity

Most resignations are for a new job. The letter's job is to leave cleanly: confirm your last day, offer a handover, and protect the reference and relieving letter you will need later.

  • You do not need to name the new company or the new salary.
  • Wait for a signed written offer before you resign.
  • Match your last working day to your joining date, and ask for early release if your notice runs past it.

Sets the letter format: India uses “To, The HR Manager” and a subject line, the UK and US do not.

About you

The last line of the address block.

Who it is addressed to

With no name, the letter is addressed to The HR Manager and opens “Dear Sir/Madam”.

Notice and your last working day

Usually the day you hand it in. Your notice is counted from this date.

Notice period in your contract

Not sure? The letter states no date and asks your employer to confirm your last working day.

Only if you have already agreed a date, or brought one from the notice period calculator. It replaces the notice period.

Reason and tone

Changes the handover paragraph.

Vikram Desai,
Head of Design,
Orbit Fintech Pvt Ltd,
Mumbai.

Subject: Resignation from the post of Product Designer

Dear Vikram,

I am writing to let you know that I am resigning from the post of Product Designer in the Design department at Orbit Fintech Pvt Ltd. In line with my notice period of 60 days, I propose Friday, 8 January 2027 as my last working day, subject to confirmation.

I have accepted an offer for a new role.

Before my last day, I will hand over my ongoing work, files and contacts. Please let me know who will take over my work, so that we can plan the handover.

I am grateful for my time at Orbit Fintech Pvt Ltd. I have learned a great deal here, and I have valued the support of the team. Thank you for your guidance and support.

Please let me know the exit formalities. I would also request you to issue my relieving letter and experience certificate, and to process my full and final settlement.

I hope we will stay in touch. I wish you and the team every success.

Warm regards,
Neha Sharma
Product Designer, Design

Before you resign

  • Have the offer signed, with the joining date agreed, before you hand in your letter.
  • Give the new employer a joining date that allows for your notice, or for the early release you will ask for.
  • Ask whether the offer depends on references or a background check, so you know what you will need from this employer.

Say "a new role", not "a better opportunity"

"I have accepted an offer for a new role" is neutral. "A better opportunity" tells your employer their job was worse, and it goes on your file. The generator uses the neutral line in every tone.

If your manager makes a counter-offer

Decide before you resign what, if anything, would change your mind. The letter is not a negotiation: if you would stay for more money, have that conversation first, and resign only if it fails.

Background checks at the new job

Indian employers often verify past jobs and ask for your relieving letter and recent payslips. Ask for the relieving letter and experience certificate in your resignation, and keep your last few payslips.

If an early release changes your last working day, tell the new employer the final date, so the dates on your resume match your relieving letter.

References in the UK

A UK employer does not usually have to give a reference, except where a written agreement or a regulator, such as in financial services, requires one. If they give one, it must be fair and accurate, and it can be a basic one with only your job title and dates.

A new employer may make the offer conditional on references. Leaving on good terms, with a full handover, is what keeps a detailed reference on the table.

If the new employer will pay your buyout

Some Indian employers pay all or part of a notice buyout to get a candidate sooner. Ask for it in your offer letter or a signed email, with the amount or the rule (for example, "up to 30 days of basic pay"). Your current employer still has to agree to the early release; the money only settles what you owe for the days short.

Questions

Common questions.

Should I mention my new company in my resignation letter?
No. You can tell your manager if you want to, but the letter does not need it. "I have accepted an offer for a new role" is enough.
How do I resign without burning bridges?
Tell your manager before they read the letter, keep the letter short and neutral, offer a real handover, and leave out pay, complaints and comparisons.
What if my new joining date is before my notice ends?
Ask for an early release in the resignation letter, with both dates, and offer leave or a buyout for the days short. Until your employer agrees, ask the new employer to keep the later date as a fallback.
Should I accept a counter-offer?
Only if the reason you were leaving is fixed by it. If you resigned for the role, the team or your growth, more money rarely changes that.
