Resignation letter for higher studies

When you resign to study, the course start date sets your deadline. The letter should give your last working day, ask for an early release if your notice runs past joining, and ask for the documents your university and visa will need.

  • Work back from the date you must reach the campus, not the date classes start.
  • Ask for your experience certificate in the letter. Many MBA and master's programmes ask for proof of work experience.
  • If you might return after the course, say so. Some employers offer study leave or a way back.

Sets the letter format: India uses “To, The HR Manager” and a subject line, the UK and US do not.

About you

The last line of the address block.

Who it is addressed to

With no name, the letter is addressed to The HR Manager and opens “Dear Sir/Madam”.

Notice and your last working day

Usually the day you hand it in. Your notice is counted from this date.

Notice period in your contract

Not sure? The letter states no date and asks your employer to confirm your last working day.

Only if you have already agreed a date, or brought one from the notice period calculator. It replaces the notice period.

A business analyst resigning for a master's course, asking to leave two weeks early.
Date: 3 May 2027

To,
Ms. Farah Khan,
Director, Analytics,
Kestrel Consulting Pvt Ltd,
Hyderabad.

Subject: Resignation from the post of Business Analyst (Employee ID: KC-3307)

Dear Ms. Khan,

Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from the post of Business Analyst in the Analytics department at Kestrel Consulting Pvt Ltd. In line with my notice period of 60 days, I propose Friday, 2 July 2027 as my last working day, subject to confirmation.

I am leaving to pursue higher studies.

I would like to request an early release, with Friday, 18 June 2027 as my last working day instead of Friday, 2 July 2027. If needed, I am willing to pay the notice period buyout for the remaining days, as per company policy.

Before my last day, I will hand over my ongoing work, files and contacts. Please let me know who will take over my work, so that we can plan the handover.

Thank you for the opportunities I have had at Kestrel Consulting Pvt Ltd and for the support of the team during my time here.

Please let me know the exit formalities. I would also request you to issue my relieving letter and experience certificate, and to process my full and final settlement.

I wish Kestrel Consulting Pvt Ltd continued success.

Yours sincerely,
Aditya Rao
Business Analyst, Analytics

Time your notice to the course

With 60 days' notice handed in on Monday, 3 May 2027, your last working day is Friday, 2 July 2027. If you must fly out in late June, that is too late, so ask for an early release in the same letter and offer a buyout or leave for the days short.

Resign as soon as your admission and funding are confirmed in writing, not before.

Documents to ask for

  • An experience certificate with your dates and role, for admissions and some visa applications.
  • Your relieving letter.
  • Your last few salary slips, if your visa or education loan asks for proof of income.
  • A recommendation letter, if you still need one. Ask before you resign, while your manager has time.

Study leave instead of resigning

Some employers offer unpaid study leave or a career break for a one- or two-year course. If you would like to come back, ask HR before you resign. If they say no, the letter can still say you would welcome the chance to return.

Check your gratuity date first

In India, an employer covered by the gratuity law pays it on resignation only after at least five years of continuous service. Your service runs until your last working day, so if you are close to five years, count to your last day before you ask for an early release. Leaving a few weeks early can cost you the whole gratuity.

Training bonds and sponsored courses

If you signed a service agreement or training bond, for a sponsored course, a certification or overseas training, read its exit clause before you resign. It may ask you to repay part of the cost if you leave within a set period. Ask HR for the amount in writing, so it is not a surprise in your full and final settlement.

If your employer is sponsoring the new course, it is not a resignation. Ask HR how study leave or a bond works for it instead.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I write a resignation letter for higher studies?
State that you are resigning, give your last working day from your notice period, and say you are leaving to pursue higher studies. Add an early release request if you need to leave sooner, and ask for your experience certificate and relieving letter.
Should I name the university or course?
Only if you want to. "To pursue higher studies" is enough. Some people name the course to explain the timing, which is fine.
Can I ask for early release to join my course?
Yes. Give the date you need to leave and offer leave or a buyout for the days short. Your employer decides, so ask as early as you can.
Will my company give me an experience certificate if I leave for studies?
Most employers issue one once your exit formalities are complete, whatever your reason for leaving. Ask for it in your letter, so the request is on record.
