Immediate resignation letter

Sometimes you cannot serve your notice: a health problem, a family emergency, or a job you need to leave now. An immediate resignation letter says so plainly and asks your employer to agree.

  • Resigning with immediate effect does not cancel your notice period. Your employer still has to agree to waive it.
  • Offer something in return: a handover note, unused leave against the notice, or in India a notice buyout.
  • Keep the reason short. "Health reasons" or "personal reasons" is enough.

Sets the letter format: India uses “To, The HR Manager” and a subject line, the UK and US do not.

About you

The last line of the address block.

Who it is addressed to

With no name, the letter is addressed to The HR Manager and opens “Dear Sir/Madam”.

Notice and your last working day

Usually the day you hand it in. Your notice is counted from this date.

Notice period in your contract

Not sure? The letter states no date and asks your employer to confirm your last working day.

Only if you have already agreed a date, or brought one from the notice period calculator. It replaces the notice period.

An immediate resignation in India, asking for the notice to be waived.
Date: 22 October 2026

To,
The HR Manager,
Meridian Retail Pvt Ltd,
Pune.

Subject: Resignation from the post of Customer Support Executive (Employee ID: MR-2291)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation from the post of Customer Support Executive in the Operations department at Meridian Retail Pvt Ltd, and my request to leave with immediate effect. I request you to kindly waive my notice period and relieve me today, Thursday, 22 October 2026.

I am resigning for health reasons.

I understand that this is short notice, and I am sorry for the difficulty it may cause. I am happy for my unused leave to be adjusted against the remaining notice period. If a waiver is not possible, I am willing to pay the notice period buyout as per company policy.

I will leave a handover note covering my ongoing work, files and contacts.

Thank you for the opportunities I have had at Meridian Retail Pvt Ltd and for the support of the team during my time here.

Please let me know the exit formalities. I would also request you to issue my relieving letter and experience certificate, and to process my full and final settlement.

I wish Meridian Retail Pvt Ltd continued success.

Yours faithfully,
Sneha Kulkarni
Customer Support Executive, Operations

What happens to your notice period

India: your appointment letter sets your notice. If you leave without serving it, and your employer has not waived it, they may recover pay for the notice from your full and final settlement or delay your relieving letter. That is why the letter asks for a waiver and offers leave or a buyout.

United Kingdom: leaving before your notice ends without your employer's agreement is likely to breach your contract, Acas says, and could affect your reference. Agree a shorter notice and get the agreement in writing.

United States: in an at-will job you can usually leave at once. Expect not to be paid for days you do not work.

How to ask for a waiver

  • Say you are resigning and would like to leave with immediate effect, with today as your last day if your employer agrees.
  • Say once that you know it is short notice, and apologise once. Do not repeat it.
  • Ask directly: "I request you to kindly waive my notice period."
  • Offer what you can: a written handover note today, unused leave against the notice, or in India a buyout as per policy.

If you are leaving for health reasons

You do not have to share a diagnosis. If you want the notice waived, a doctor's certificate given to HR, not written into the letter, often helps. Before you resign, check whether sick leave or unpaid leave would solve the problem without giving up the job.

If you are leaving because of how you were treated

Keep it out of the resignation letter and raise it as a separate complaint. In the UK, if your employer has seriously breached your contract you might have a claim for constructive dismissal, which can also affect your notice. Get advice from Acas before you resign.

Questions

Common questions.

Can I resign without serving notice in India?
You can resign, but the notice in your appointment letter still applies until your employer waives it. Ask for a waiver in the letter, and offer unused leave or a notice buyout for the days you will not serve.
What should I write in an immediate resignation letter?
That you are resigning, a request to waive the notice period so that today can be your last working day, one short reason if you want, and how you will hand over your work. The generator writes it for India, the UK and the US.
Will I get my relieving letter if I resign immediately?
Usually, once your employer agrees to waive the notice or you settle the buyout and finish your exit formalities. Ask for the relieving letter in writing in the same letter.
Can I resign with immediate effect in the UK?
Only by agreement, unless your employer has seriously breached your contract. Otherwise you must work your contractual notice, or at least the statutory week, so ask your employer to agree a shorter notice in writing.
