Resignation letter for personal reasons

"Personal reasons" is a complete reason. You do not owe your employer details about your health, family or plans, and a letter that explains too much is harder to keep neutral.

  • One line is enough: "I am resigning for personal reasons."
  • If you want flexibility, such as an early release, ask for it in its own paragraph.
  • Tell your manager in person if you want to share more. Keep it out of the letter, which goes on your file.

Sets the letter format: India uses “To, The HR Manager” and a subject line, the UK and US do not.

About you

The last line of the address block.

Who it is addressed to

With no name, the letter is addressed to The HR Manager and opens “Dear Sir/Madam”.

Notice and your last working day

Usually the day you hand it in. Your notice is counted from this date.

Notice period in your contract

Not sure? The letter states no date and asks your employer to confirm your last working day.

Only if you have already agreed a date, or brought one from the notice period calculator. It replaces the notice period.

A personal-reasons resignation in India, asking to leave a little early.
Date: 2 November 2026

To,
Mr. Sanjay Gupta,
Area Sales Manager,
Aravali Motors Pvt Ltd,
Gurugram.

Subject: Resignation from the post of Sales Executive

Dear Mr. Gupta,

Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from the post of Sales Executive at Aravali Motors Pvt Ltd. In line with my notice period of 30 days, I propose Wednesday, 2 December 2026 as my last working day, subject to confirmation.

I am resigning for personal reasons.

I would like to request an early release, with Friday, 20 November 2026 as my last working day instead of Wednesday, 2 December 2026. I am happy for my unused leave to be adjusted against the remaining notice period.

Before my last day, I will hand over my ongoing work, files and contacts. Please let me know who will take over my work, so that we can plan the handover.

Thank you for the opportunities I have had at Aravali Motors Pvt Ltd and for the support of the team during my time here.

Please let me know the exit formalities. I would also request you to issue my relieving letter and experience certificate, and to process my full and final settlement.

I wish Aravali Motors Pvt Ltd continued success.

Yours sincerely,
Rahul Verma
Sales Executive

How much to say

  • Nothing more than "personal reasons". This is enough for any employer.
  • A general area: "family responsibilities" or "health reasons". Useful if you will ask for flexibility.
  • The full story. Keep it for a conversation with your manager, not the letter.

If you will ask for something, such as an early release, a little more context helps HR agree. Otherwise the shortest version is the safest one to put on your file.

Lines you can use

  • I am resigning for personal reasons.
  • I am resigning to attend to family responsibilities.
  • I am resigning for health reasons.
  • I would like to request an early release, with [date] as my last working day.
  • I would welcome the chance to work together again in future.

Lines to leave out

  • Medical details, or anyone else's private situation.
  • "Due to unavoidable circumstances". It is vague and reads like an excuse.
  • Anything that blames a person or the company.
  • "I may come back if things change". If you mean it, say it to your manager.

Leave you may have before you resign

If the reason is your health or a family member's, check whether leave would cover it. Resigning ends your pay and your right to come back; leave may keep both.

  • United States: the Family and Medical Leave Act gives up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave a year, for your own serious health condition or to care for a spouse, child or parent with one. You qualify after 12 months with the employer and 1,250 hours in the last year, where it has 50 or more employees within 75 miles.
  • United Kingdom: you have a right to reasonable time off to deal with an emergency involving a dependant, such as a child or a parent who relies on you. Whether it is paid is up to your employer. If you are too ill to work, you may get Statutory Sick Pay for up to 28 weeks.
  • India: your earned leave and sick leave are set by your appointment letter and HR policy. Leave beyond that, such as unpaid leave or a sabbatical, is your employer's choice.

Ask HR in writing before you resign. If they say no, you have lost nothing, and the letter can still go in the next day.

What your exit documents will say

A relieving letter or experience certificate usually records your role and dates, not why you left. In the UK a reference must be fair and accurate if your employer gives one, and it can be a basic one with only your job title and dates. So a short "personal reasons" line keeps your privacy and costs you nothing later.

Questions

Common questions.

Is "personal reasons" an acceptable reason for resigning?
Yes. You do not have to explain why you are leaving, and HR sees this line every week. Give more detail only if it helps you ask for something, such as an early release.
Will HR ask me what the personal reasons are?
They may ask in an exit interview. You can answer as much or as little as you like. Saying "I would rather keep it private" is fine.
Can I take back my resignation?
Only if your employer agrees. Once you have handed it in, your employer can accept it and hold you to your last working day.
Should I resign for personal reasons or take leave?
If the reason is temporary, ask HR about leave first. Some employers offer unpaid leave or a career break, which keeps the job open.
