What changes between an Indian resume and a CV for Switzerland

CV or Lebenslauf, depending on which language region the job sits in.

A photograph is customary on a Swiss CV, and its absence is more noticeable here than almost anywhere else in Europe.

Date of birth, nationality and permit type (B, C or L) are normally stated. Language ability goes on the CEFR scale.

The language follows the region — German in Zurich and Basel, French in Geneva and Lausanne, Italian in Ticino — and applying in the wrong one is a real error rather than a stylistic one. English is accepted in pharmaceuticals, finance and the international organisations.

The rules that only apply in Switzerland

• The Swiss application is a dossier, not a file: CV, cover letter, work certificates (Arbeitszeugnisse) and diplomas travel together. An application with no certificates reads as incomplete rather than as concise.
• Swiss work certificates are written in a coded register of formulaic praise that Swiss readers decode precisely. You will have none, so one plain line saying Indian employers do not issue them stops the gap being read as a poor reference.
• Say which permit you hold or need. Third-country nationals face annual quotas and a labour-market test, so someone who already holds a permit is in a different category rather than merely ahead.

How your CV actually gets read in Switzerland

The large employers run Workday or SuccessFactors like everyone else, but the distinguishing feature of the Swiss market is that your file is read alongside certificates and diplomas rather than alone. Consistency between the documents is what actually gets checked — a date on the CV that disagrees with a certificate is the failure mode here.

What employers in Switzerland ask about your right to work

Indian passport holders are third-country nationals, admitted under annual quotas, only as qualified specialists, and only once the employer has shown no EU or EFTA candidate was available. In practice that means large employers and genuinely scarce skills.
