An attorney resume should show the type of legal work you do and the level at which you contribute. The fictional example focuses on commercial litigation and supervised associate work. It does not claim a trial record, specialist accreditation or independent ownership of every matter. Use accurate practice descriptions and job titles. A recruiter should be able to distinguish drafting, research, client contact and matter leadership without having to infer your role from a firm’s name. Add your actual admission jurisdiction and current status where requested. This fictional document omits an invented admission number.

Describe matters without exposing clients

Select examples that communicate complexity and your contribution while protecting confidential information. A broad description of a commercial dispute may be enough. Do not assume that removing a client’s name makes a detailed account safe to publish; dates, transaction values and unusual facts can identify a matter together. Follow applicable professional obligations and employer requirements. Where permission is uncertain, describe the kind of work product or process rather than specific client circumstances.

Use precise verbs for legal work

Drafted for review, researched, coordinated and prepared can be strong verbs when they accurately describe your responsibility. Do not change supported counsel into led representation for a more senior-sounding bullet. If you did lead a workstream, explain its scope. An example about organising document review can show judgement and delivery without claiming that you personally determined the outcome of a case. Separate team achievements from actions you directly owned.
