10 Real Estate Interview Questions With Practical Answers

Prepare real estate interview answers on client briefs, viewings, offers, property information, conflicts and transaction follow-up.

These questions focus on agency and brokerage work, not investment advice or property valuation instructions. Licensing, disclosure and transaction rules vary by location. Prepare using the vacancy, the firm’s procedures and the requirements applicable to the market where you would work.

Prepare a realistic client scenario

Use a fictional client brief with a budget range, location needs and timing. Explain how you would confirm requirements, select suitable viewings and record feedback. Do not invent a completed transaction or claim that a property will increase in value.

Interview questions & answers

Client work

1.How would you qualify a new enquiry?

Ask what the client needs, their practical constraints, timing and the relevant buying or renting process. Confirm who you represent and the next agreed step. Do not pressure the person into disclosing unnecessary private information or assume their needs from appearance, age or background.

2.How do you choose properties for a viewing shortlist?

Compare the confirmed requirements with verified property information and explain any trade-offs, such as location versus space. Check current availability before arranging a visit. A long list is not useful if the properties fail essential requirements or rely on outdated descriptions.

Property information

1.What if you cannot verify a property claim?

Identify the source and tell the client what remains unverified. Seek the appropriate document or specialist confirmation through the firm’s process. Do not present a seller’s informal statement as established fact or make legal, structural or planning assurances beyond your role.

2.How would you prepare a listing description?

Use accurate, authorised information and clear photographs or plans that represent the property fairly. Check measurements, features and restrictions through the appropriate process. Avoid unsupported superlatives or guaranteed-return claims. Keep a record of the information used and obtain the required approval before publication.

Negotiation

1.A buyer and seller disagree on price. What do you do?

Clarify each party’s position and your authority, communicate offers accurately and discuss permissible options without inventing competing bids. Keep terms and conditions clear. Your role is to support an informed negotiation within the applicable rules, not to promise that every gap can be closed.

Professional conduct

1.How would you handle a potential conflict of interest?

Identify the conflict, disclose it through the required process and obtain the appropriate professional decision before proceeding. Do not assume consent makes every conflict acceptable. RICS has conduct requirements for its members and regulated firms; local licensing rules and the firm’s obligations must also be checked.

Follow-up

1.What belongs in a viewing follow-up?

Ask which requirements the property met, what concerns remain and whether the client wants a specific next step. Record factual feedback and agreed actions. Avoid repeated pressure or an invented deadline. Useful follow-up helps refine the search even when the property is not suitable.

Transactions

1.How would you manage a transaction that is delayed?

Identify the outstanding dependency and its owner, confirm the latest information and update the parties through the approved channel. Distinguish an estimate from a confirmed date. Keep the transaction record current and refer legal or financing questions to the appropriate qualified professional.

Evidence

1.Which results would you discuss in an interview?

Use results you can substantiate, such as completed transactions, maintained listings or resolved coordination issues, with the period and your contribution. Explain whether you sourced the client, managed viewings or supported completion. Do not treat the full property value as revenue you personally generated.

Role fit

1.What would you ask the firm?

Ask about representation, licensing support, supervision, lead allocation, marketing approval and transaction responsibilities. Clarify how complaints and conflicts are handled. Understand the actual compensation and working arrangements from the employer rather than assuming all real estate roles operate on the same model.
