How to List Study Abroad on a Resume
List study abroad with the right institution, programme label and dates. See fictional education and project examples without implying an extra degree.
List study abroad where it helps explain your education or relevant experience. For a semester exchange, that is usually the education section. Name the host institution, location, programme and dates, and make it clear whether you earned a separate qualification. Studying at a university for one term is not the same as graduating from it with a degree.
Put the home qualification first
If the exchange formed part of your degree, keep the degree-granting institution as the main entry. Add the host programme beneath it or as a clearly labelled second education entry. The following institutions and candidate details are fictional.
BSc Economics, Example Rivergate University, India | 2022 to 2026
Semester exchange, Example North Coast University, Netherlands | September 2024 to January 2025. Coursework in public economics and applied statistics.
This wording establishes the relationship between the two institutions. Do not list BSc Economics twice if the host university did not award another degree. Use the programme's official name when that helps avoid ambiguity.
Choose details that support the application
Relevant coursework, a research assignment or a team project can explain why the experience matters. A long list of travel destinations usually cannot. For an analyst application, a data project may be useful. For a language-intensive role, genuine language use may be relevant. Do not claim professional fluency solely because you spent several months in a country.
A fictional project bullet might read: Compared public transport survey responses in a four-person exchange project, cleaned incomplete entries and presented the limitations of the dataset to the class. This explains a task and a contribution. It does not turn a course assignment into a published study or a paid consulting engagement.
Use a separate project entry when the work deserves space
If the project is strongly relevant, give it a name, context and two short bullets in a projects section. Identify it as coursework and state the institution or programme. Explain the question, what you did and the output. Keep confidential participant information and unpublished research data out of public links.
For example: Urban Travel Survey, exchange coursework, 2024. Cleaned a synthetic practice dataset and compared weekday travel patterns. Documented missing-value decisions and presented a short analysis with two classmates. The details are fictional; replace them with work you actually completed.
Distinguish study, internship and travel
An internship abroad belongs in experience when it involved work. A language course may fit education or training. Independent travel is not automatically a study programme. Label each activity honestly instead of choosing the category that sounds most impressive. If several activities overlapped, use dates that make the timeline understandable.
A short study visit does not need as much space as a full exchange semester. You might use a single line naming the programme and the relevant topic. As your career develops, reduce the entry if recent work gives stronger evidence of the same skills.
Handle grades and translations carefully
Use a grade you can substantiate and keep the grading system clear. Do not convert a foreign result into a local GPA using an informal guess. If an employer requires an official equivalence, follow its stated process. The same principle applies to qualification titles: an explanatory translation can help, but it should not imply an award you did not receive.
Keep institution names consistent with your records. If a programme used English while the institution's official name is in another language, choose wording that the recipient can identify and verify. There is no need to translate every place name or add an elaborate explanation to a one-line exchange entry.
Avoid vague claims about global exposure
International teamwork is more convincing when you explain a specific situation. Coordinating a shared presentation across different course schedules is concrete. Becoming a global leader through travel is not. Select evidence of communication, adaptation or analysis that you can discuss at interview without relying on a broad label.
Use the resume section guide to decide where the exchange fits and review the final resume for clarity. Before applying, confirm that the degree, host programme, dates and project descriptions agree with your records. The reader should understand both what you studied and what you learned to do.
